Contrary to popular belief, developing artificial intelligence that is on par with or superior to that of humans is much more difficult than previously thought. Professors Gary Marcus and Ernest Davis have spent their entire careers at the forefront of AI research and have been present for some of the most significant turning points. However, they contend that just because a computer beat a human in Jeopardy! does not mean that fully autonomous vehicles or superintelligent machines are just around the corner. The advances made in the field thus far have taken place in closed systems with predetermined sets of rules, and these methods are too constrained to produce true intelligence
