Murphy eventually found a place with the infantry after being rejected by both the marines and the paratroopers because he was too short. He fought in conflicts across the globe, including Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany. He was credited with killing, capturing, or wounding 240 Germans despite being only twenty-one years old on V-E Day. He was America’s most decorated soldier after the war, with twenty-one decorations, including the Congressional Medal of Honor, our highest military honour. To Hell and Back is a harrowing account of American soldiers in combat.
