The New York Times has called Joan C. Williams “something approaching rock star status” in her area. In her book White Working Class, she shows why so much of the elite’s analysis of the white working class is flawed and is founded on what she has controversially dubbed “class cluelessness.” Williams illustrates how “working class” and “poor” have been confused by most commentators and the related media coverage. Too frequently, the objectives of white working-class people have been written off as simple racism or xenophobia.
